AION 2 Flight Guide: Wings, Aerial Combat & Underwater
Flight in AION 2 is a combat system, not a travel tool: free flight in every zone, aerial fights, and underwater exploration — what veterans need to know.
FAQ
Can you fly anywhere in AION 2?
Is flight only for traveling between quests?
Did the original Aion have this much flight?
Flight is the identity of this series, and in AION 2 it is bigger than it has ever been: NC describes free flight across every zone of a world roughly 36 times the original’s, plus underwater exploration the 2008 game never had. More importantly, the developers frame flight as a combat system — not a traversal gimmick — and nowhere is that clearer than in the Abyss, the cross-server PvPvE battlefield where wings decide fights.
Is flight a travel tool or a combat system?
Both, but the official framing is unambiguous: flight is built into combat. Aerial positioning and airborne engagements are part of how encounters are designed — this is the sequel’s core pitch against the original’s more restricted skies. The ground game itself is an action-ized tab-target hybrid, so expect fighting on wings to feel closer to that hybrid model than to a separate “flight mode.”
What we don’t have yet is mechanics at the level of detail a wiki needs: control bindings, any flight-time or stamina model, which skills function airborne, and how aerial targeting works in the global build. The September 17–18 Launch Scale Test offered two days of hands-on at a level 37 cap, and community reports from it are scattered — precise numbers here are to be confirmed at launch, and this page will be updated once they are.
Where can I fly?
Everywhere, by design. NC’s pitch is that every zone supports free flight — an “if you can see it, you can reach it” world — on a map about 36 times the size of the original game, spanning both Elysea and Asmodae on either side of the Bulwark veil. Underwater spaces are part of that promise, which is a first for the series.

That freedom has practical weight while leveling: on a world this size, flight is the difference between crossing a region and commuting through it. Several exploration systems are built to be found from the air — 172 Hidden Cubes, timed Spacetime Rift events, and a pool of more than 300 pets and mounts. For how flight fits into the 1–45 journey, see the leveling guide.
Can I buy better wings or mounts?
Only cosmetically, per NC’s stated monetization plan for the global version. The cash shop sells outfits, wings, and pets, and the official commitment is that these items carry no stats — so there is no pay-to-fly-better lever. What is gated is trading rather than power: the Marketplace, the Kina↔Quna Exchange, and player-to-player trades require the optional $15/month Membership. The membership and economy guide has the full breakdown, including how the global model compares to the Korean version’s two-tier scheme.
How does aerial combat work?
Confirmed at the system level, pending at the detail level. What is sourced:
- Flight is integrated into combat design per NC’s own descriptions — engagements happen in three dimensions, not on a ground plane.
- The marquee aerial battleground is the Abyss: cross-server PvPvE where factions fight over the same airspace, covered in our Abyss guide.
- Open-world skirmishing includes Rifting — timed invasion waves reported at roughly every three hours, lasting about an hour, behind a War Mode opt-in toggle.
- In the Korean version, a March 2026 update separated PvP and PvE damage formulas and added Chaotic Abyss, a cross-faction battle mode. The global build inherits roughly a year of Korean balance changes, but the exact contents of the launch patch are to be confirmed.
What is not yet documented for the global build: stamina or altitude limits, aerial skill restrictions, ground-versus-air damage interactions, and underwater combat rules. We will publish verified values after launch rather than guess now.
What about underwater exploration?
It exists — officially confirmed — and it is a first for the series; the 2008 original had no underwater layer at all, so this is genuinely new design space rather than a returning feature. Beyond that, the honest answer is “unknown”: whether underwater areas support combat, gathering, or their own traversal rules is to be confirmed at launch, and we’ll document it once the global build is playable.

What should returning Aion veterans expect?
Two headline differences. First, the walls are gone: free flight across all zones and underwater exploration are both things the 2008 game never offered. Second, the Abyss returns in evolved form — cross-server now, with Rifting invasions, 10v10 battlefields, arenas, and the Abyss Points currency — while the Korean version’s Chaotic Abyss cross-faction mode may or may not be in the global launch build. Check the global vs. Korea guide for the state of the version gap before assuming a Korean-era mechanic made the cut.
When will the exact flight mechanics be known?
At launch. The two-day LST window was not enough to document controls and limits reliably, and the next hands-on window is Founder’s Pack early access starting September 30, ahead of the full launch on October 5. If you are still deciding whether to be there on day one, the beginner guide covers the rest of the first-session checklist, and our class tier list tracks how the eight launch classes shake out — including which ones benefit most from vertical fights, once that can be tested rather than guessed.
